When laying hens suffer stress caused by heat, it is reflected with a negative zootechnical performance, affecting intestinal health, electrolyte imbalance and even compromising the bird’s immune response. The laying hen loses a large amount of bicarbonate ions in an attempt by the kidney to balance the respiratory alkalosis. This disorder hinders the process of calcium deposition in the eggshell. The aim of his work was to determine the effect of the addition of acidifiers in the diet of laying hens on the serum concentration of some minerals, including ionized calcium, considered as an indicator of the mineral balance alteration of the bird induced by heat stress, and its relation to shell thickness. The results obtained for the variables ionized calcium and shell thickness were significant between the groups in the summer months (January and February), corresponding to T° above 30° C. It is inferred that the addition of acidifiers in the diet of laying hens during the summer months would reduce heat stress and would have a favorable effect on the serum concentration of ionized calcium, improving eggshell thickness.
