Resumen
Understanding dog-ownership practices is critical for mitigating impacts in socio-ecosystems, particularly regarding wildlife, human health, and the welfare of the pets themselves. We conducted an online survey of 208 dog owners in northern Argentine Patagonia to explore pet-ownership behaviors, perceptions, and the influence of sociodemographic factors. The owners’ education level was positively associated with care practices, including the number of care practices adopted and vaccination adherence. Meanwhile the number of dogs per household was positively associated with deworming but negatively to vaccination and neutering. Likewise, the majority of respondents recognized free-roaming dogs as a problem. Survey respondents suggested interventions such as neutering, penalties, and education on responsible pet ownership. These findings provide evidence-based insights for strategies that integrate human dimensions, and highlight the potential role of education, institutional support, and enforceable policies.
