This article reflects on the productivity (methodological and sociological) of visual narrative workshops conducted with youth from Villa Elvira, a locality on the periphery of the city of La Plata (Argentina), for the exploration of urban experience. From the description and analysis of the dynamics between practices, images and words generated during the workshops, the article delimits three “modes of doing”: 1) the workshops as a “way of expressing” (that is, of showing and saying) the youth urban experience from the periphery, which is characterized by 2) a “way of walking” through the neighborhood and the city, in which distances, conditions, times and desires are intertwined, giving rise to 3) a “way of seeing” the city, the product of a situated relationship (from the margins) between gaze, body and world. The workshops encourage a recursive dialogue between new data and interpretative efforts that invite us to “open up” the urban experience of young people from the periphery, which is not limited to the unequal conditions in which they live, but is also expressed in the ways of doing, showing, saying and seeing from a peripheral dwelling.
