The purpose of this paper is to analyze the construction of the female figure and her role in the history of salvation as it is represented in the poem Loores de Nuestra Señora by Gonzalo de Berceo. The aim is to assess the extent of the continuity or rupture with the tradition in force during the xiiith century. The presentation will focus on three features: the contrast between the figure of Eve and Mary through the poem, the Virgin’s portrayal as an active character in the stanzas 20-41 –which relate the Annunciation, the birth and the childhood of Jesus– and the apologetic meditation about the function of the women in the Church, which is included after the episode of the Holy Sepulchre –stanzas 108-111–.
