This article analyzes the social construction of venereal diseases taking into account two key players: health institutions and the sick. Two processes that contributed to the sexually transmitted disease imaginary are explored. On the one hand, the active intervention of the State through venereal prophylaxis campaigns that, starting in 1936, demarcated those who suffered from STDs as a potential risk for the healthy reproduction of the population and invoked an ideal subject, implying a sexually masculine citizenship, with class mandates and committed to the nation’s future. On the other hand, the popular imagination about the origin, prevention, cure and stigma of the illnesses they suffered. Whereas the meanings expressed in health campaigns crisscrossed their representations, sick people (actual or potential) questioned public discourses by outlining their own notions based on their subjectivity and their experience. Far from submitting to the proposals of the National Department of Hygiene, they actively participated in the process of social construction of venereal diseases and of their own citizenship.
