In the last decades, the rurality of Santiago del Estero experienced profound transformations. The mains changes are the advance of the agricultural frontier, the displacement of peasants units, the new characteristics of the rural homes, the dissemination of social protection among the rural population and the agricultural workers, the growth of small urban localities and the redefinition of migrant labor markets. In this scenario, the agricultural workers of this province modify some of their characteristics, like the socio-demographic profile of the workers and the type of work carried out. Different processes stand out, like workers coming from rural families without peasant activity, the urbanization of the worker´s residence, and the masculinization of transitory migrations. All in all, we find agricultural workers who blur their traditional profile of peasant families living in rural areas who combine farm work with wage labor. This paper is based on the analysis of data from the National Household and Housing Population Census (2010) and the results of the survey on Employment, Social Protection and Working Conditions of Agricultural Wages made by the National Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security (2014).
