After several years of political instability in the River Plate area, as a result of the independence wars and the turbulent 1810s, the ruling elites needed to ensure social stability. This could only be achieved with a strong administration. Since 1820, considering this prevailing need for stability, the two political factions in conflict (Unitarian and Federalist) began to compete to be guarantors of the ‘order’ that could only be at risk if the antagonist faction took over the government, thereby unleashing ‘anarchy’. In this presentation, I seek to delve into this issue and analyse what "order" implied for both Unitarians and Federalists, its definitions and political applications; attempting to deepen on the knowledge of culture, practices and political discourses of the first half of the nineteenth century.
