The characteristics of the recent crisis are explained by the transformations that took place during the neoliberal period of the last three decades. This period began with Thatcherism, gained strength with the collapse of the USSR and currently persists while trampling on social conquests. Neoliberalism modified the functioning of capitalism via privatisations, trade opening and relaxation of laws relating to terms of employment. It broadened the sectoral and territorial radius of accumulation, subjecting new activities (education, health, retirement funding) and geographical spaces (former socialist countries) to the kingdom of profit. It has motivated more segmented ways of consumption and flexible ways of production, which are factors that strengthen unemployment, feminization of work and polarization of qualifications. Neoliberalism accentuated precarious work conditions in all professional categories, creating a hard scenario of work unreliability. The increase in social disparity is a consequence of this regression.
