This article considers the relation between history and memory in The San Francisco del Laishi Mission, which was founded in 1901 in the Formosa region by the Franciscan Order and remained open until the fifties. We interrogate the account which has been elaborated regarding the work of the Franciscan Order and the place of the native population in it as the “recipients” of this “work”. We analyze different schemata looking for avenues by which the question may be approached: stories transmitted both in written and spoken form from the settlers, documentary sources and the academic literature. The analysis of different sources enables us to consider some elements that can be used to build a story of memories of The Laishí Mission, taking into account how depictions of the past evolve and including both the historical view of the moment itself and the examination of its legacy.
