In the face of the recent emergence of anti-democratic forces that come to power not only within the framework given by established formal institutions, but even through "democratic" channels, the challenge arises of elaborating a political theory and, especially, a conception of democracy, that does not serve the purposes of such forces. Analogous to the problems that Walter Benjamin posed for art theory in the 1930s, I consider here that it is through the elaboration of such political theory that we can make ourselves the categories with which to apprehend current threats to democracy, which are not perceptible with categories that can be used for anti-democratic purposes. To this end, this article proposes a problematization of democracy from an aesthetic register, based on the articulation of categories that come mainly from the works of Benjamin and Jacques Rancière. Meanwhile, beyond their differences -which will be pointed out-, a series of points of contact can be detected, with an axis in an aesthetic approach to the configuration of the political.
