The link between reading and editing has driven literary theory and criticism, to a large extent guided by certain “genetic illusion”, towards the archive, both as a practice and as a notion. This movement, in the last two decades of the 20th century, has consolidated notoriously in the American field, renovating categories such as “canon” or “corpus” and questioning the “estheticity” and methodological “historicity” of its objects. In addition, by noticeably affecting the link between reading and theory, it has established itself as a definitely critical problem, that is: a problem of the “critics”. At the same time, by favoring a (North/South) geopolitics and an uneven critical circulation of the archive (retrospective and introspective, at the same time), this movement has encouraged and configured – between centuries– a series of key notions, so much philological as institutional, so much literary as political, that –in the 21st century– literary studies still organize, influence or resist. This next essay takes on this movement, its American “critical” inscription, and its current relevance to the distinction of problems and literary projects (editorial, theoretical and institutional). Or, its prolegomena.
