This work seeks to share some initial reflections on the epistemological position adopted in order to explore the significations that women attribute to their experience of medical abortion. It also considers the project’s inscription within the field of qualitative research on gender studies, and the process of selection of a relevant conceptual framework. It is proposed that adopting an epistemological and theoretical feminist position enables the addressing of the knowledge problem from the perspective of groups that have been historically silenced, and makes it possible to build up situated knowledges and knowledge committed to the social transformation, in this case, in relation to gender oppression. Moreover, the article shows the need to adopt a critical deconstructive attitude towards certain hegemonic currents within psychology and psychoanalysis, in order to arrive at enriching conceptual contributions. In this regard, this project seeks to combine the conceptual contributions from psychoanalytic psychology surrounding the notions of subjectivity and women’s mental health, with conceptual tools provided by gender studies. Our theoretical proposal captures the specificity present in women’s mental health, and considers socio-cultural, political and historical characteristics of subjectivation processes. In this way, it overcomes binary oppositions such as health/sickness, normal/pathological, subjective/objective, internal/external.
