The study Two poems of Friedrich Hölderlin is Walter Benjamin´s first major critical work. Regarding this essay, the interpreters have been so far concerned with Benjamin´s more general thesis and influences, without taking further acknowledgement of the heterodox twists active on his exegetical strategies. But, beyond the veil of the essay´s methodological principles, it is possible to recognize the roots of a modern approach to Hölderlin´s poetics, where the classical idealistic motives are replaced with a more sensual and materialist reading. Such turn would respond to the presence of early intuitions that eventually will become significant critical axes in Benjamin´s thought.
