A metropolitan region is commonly understood as a large, more or less continuous expanse of human settlements, or as a group of local governments connected through political arrangements aimed at achieving more prosperous joint development. This research aims to reflect on metropolitan systems beyond urban areas and to develop a narrative that incorporates the territories where biological and environmental processes that sustain life in the metropolis take place—making it applicable to concrete cases. A preliminary phase of critical literature review and related case studies led to the proposal of the 5+5+5+(?) narrative. Through successive and complementary approximations, this narrative reconstructs a metropolis by integrating the territories where basic subsistence processes occur: the supply of food, of water for human and productive use, air purification, and waste management. Subsequently, taking Latin America as a paradigmatic context of urbanization amid the global environmental crisis, I apply this narrative to reconstruct the extent of the Metropolitan Region of Córdoba (Argentina) through a transdisciplinary literature review and the processing of geospatial information. The results allow for a deeper exploration of the more-than-urban dimension of our metropolises; they reaffirm the essential role of the immediate life-support territories of urban systems and demonstrate the potential of this narrative to support more effective planning and greater civic engagement toward resilient and sustainable metropolitan futures.
