The article examines one of the most significant legal cases during Argentina’s transition to democracy: the Hagelin case, in which the emblematic Lieutenant Alfredo Astiz was the accused. Framed between January 1984 and April 1986, when the military justice system contested and held the case file, the study focuses on the strategies employed by the defenders –a role that went beyond that of lawyers– in both the public arena and the courts to dispute the meanings attached to the case. The first section summarises the material facts assessed by the judicial authorities. The second analyses the actions of two federal courts and the initial interventions of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. The final section examines the military trial and the various strategies developed by the parties to secure acquittal. As for sources, the analysis draws on press material and case 14.784, which is key to understanding the case’s trajectory within the judicial bureaucracy.
