Fungi and lichens are agents that cause biodeterioration in archaeological materials. Based on the case study of the Cueva de Plaza site (Chubut, Patagonia, Argentina), strategies and recommendations are proposed for the handling of bone specimens that are colonized by fungi and lichens. To this end, these organisms were identified, including in situ information gathering, laboratory work, decontamination, damage mitigation, conservation, and storage. Biodeterioration processes must be addressed in an ecological manner, taking into account environmental interactions, which are useful for the reconstruction of the taphonomic history of the site. It is important to address these issues in an interdisciplinary manner in order to carry out appropriate strategies for the preservation and conservation of archaeological collections of human bone remains.
