The objective of this work was to describe the use of resources (UR) associated with T2D in current medical practice, and to assess its determinants in Latin America (LA). We analyzed data from the 5th wave of the IDMPS (International Diabetes Management Practices Study). We evaluated UR based on hospitalizations for T2D-related complications (including hypoglycemia) and absenteeism (sick leave) in the past 3 months, reported by the patients. A descriptive analysis of UR and its determinants were carried out with a generalized linear model, which estimated the incidence rate ratio (IRR). We analyzed 1398 records, 3.5% of patients with T2D were hospitalized, on average 4.6±1.6 hospitalizations/year. Absenteeism was 3.8 ± 22.4 days/year, while only 7.99% of the patients with T2D were absent from their usual activities. Patients with macrovascular complications presented higher rates of hospitalization (IRR: 2.7) and absenteeism (IRR: 3.7) than those without complications. Care by a specialist physician (diabetologist/endocrinologist) significantly reduced both rates (IRR: 0.4 [hospitalizations] and 0.38 [absenteeism]). The evidence presented shows that the direct (hospitalizations) and indirect (absenteeism) costs associated with T2D in LA are related to the presence of chronic complications as well as other preventable and consequently possible to correct variables.
