The article analyzes the territorial impact of changes in conservation and tourism policies in Argentina, relying on the National System of Protected Areas created in 1934. From a governmental/state perspective, the study delves into the formal actions taken by the state, both from a material standpoint and through the practices of the involved social actors. Based on this, a series of categories are evaluated to construct a periodization proposal that characterizes the interaction between these two sectoral policies: scenic beauty and elite tourism for conservation; popular tourism in protected areas and the emergence of biodiversity; authoritarianism for strict preservation; conservation within the framework of sustainable tourism development; National Parks as anchor attractions for international positioning. Contrary to what happened in the foundational period, in this latest period seems to outline a “conservation for tourism” which is declared a priority and strategic policy. In this context, the creation of a protected area is recognized as a starting point for the development of natural destinations and the strengthening of tourist flows, especially those from external origin.
