Introduction: Medicinal plants, among them burrito (Aloysia polystachya), are ever more commonly used for the treatment of a variety of conditions. The disadvantage of the increase in the use of plants is that a large proportion of the plant material used by processing industries is obtained from wild areas, where extraction is performed. Objective: Study the propagation of A. polystachya so as to contribute to the preservation of biodiversity, as well as to stabilize the supply of this plant to the new industries. Methods: Tests were conducted with three types of cuttings (terminal, medial and base), three substrates (sand, mountain soil and artificial mix), and a rooting stimulator (naphthaleneacetic acid). An experimental, totally randomized block design was used with a 3x3x2 factorial arrangement. Each treatment was repeated three times, and each repetition consisted in six experimental units. The variables evaluated were rooting percentage, number of roots per cutting, root length and percentage of cuttings with sprouts at 60 days. Results: Medial cuttings and the use of sand as substrate exhibited the highest values in all variables. The variables evaluated were statistically higher when the rooting stimulator was not used. Conclusion: Plant cutting vegetative propagation of A. polystachya is possible, and plants are obtained in a fast and simple manner in sufficient numbers for their commercial production.
