This article examines the evolution of the Jewish character in the short plays (sainetes) of Carlos Mauricio Pacheco, one of the most prominent playwrights of the period, through a comparative study of two of his works: Compra y venta (1906) and Ropa vieja (1923). Although the Jewish immigrant is not represented on Argentinian stages during the first decades of the twentieth century with the same frequency as other communities, such as the Italian or Spanish, there is a significant body of plays with Jewish protagonists whose plots revolve around themes linked to Jewish life. The article thus addresses a corpus that has been little explored by theater historiography and has not yet been analyzed together, with the aim of examining the ways in which the Jewish character is constructed and its transformations over nearly two decades of dramatic production. By doing so, the article seeks to offer insight into the internal changes in Pacheco’s dramaturgy, as well as into the evolving representation of Jewishness in Argentinian popular theater.
