Our society is undergoing a process of material change in the means of payment. It consists in a change of the material supports that our culture uses to redeem economic obligations. This change experienced a marked acceleration from the physical distancing dispositions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions on movement derived from it in 2020. Since then, the public's appeal to pre-existing electronic means of payment grew at exponential rates in the Argentine economy. This work offers a primary approach to the use of certain electronic means of payment in Argentina during the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to build a recent economic history of that cultural change, supporting the hypothesis that certain electronic means of payment are factually inscribed in the monetary system with relative independence from the public authority rules, thus leading to disputes with the sovereign prerogatives. Data series are restored, as well as the milestones that mark the course of the changing relationship between the public monetary authority and the private actors that play a leading role in the electronic payment system.
