As part of a research project that studies the functioning of the Comisión Nacional de Cultura (1933-1954) in relation to the development of the Argentine performing arts, this work is based on the analysis of some documents produced or received by said organization, in order to understand the background of the working methods of performing artists, and to examine the forms of articulation between the State and cultural workers. These documents give an account of instances of formal articulation between the associations that bring together intellectual workers (actors, writers, editors, etc.) and State officials (legislators and the Executive Branch). In this article we focus on the CNC’s Memoirs, and we analyse them guided by a research question anchored in the present – around how the self-perceptions and identifications of performing arts workers have been configured today. Inferring that, often, what we currently call “independent theatre” developed in the heat of state policies (such as encouragement, hiring and promotion), that is, with the presence of the State, we aim to contribute to a genealogy of the working modes of the performing arts.
