Everyday forms of mobility in the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires changes significantly between the different social strata. Social inequalities are reproduced by the transport system, providing inequalities mobility opportunities. Thus, those in the top positions of the social structure access better in quality and comfort, while those farther behind, tend to become captive demand of the most degraded modes. Rail passenger transport in the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires is the most emblematic example of the latter case. Subject to cancellations, delays, overcrowding and fatal events, passengers on this service are confronted to daily abuse imposed by driving in these conditions. During the first decade of the century the root system deficiencies caused a structural tension between production function and consumption function that have lead to attacks against the railway undertaking. This article describes some characteristics of the social identity of the passengers which in coordination with other intervening factors help us to understand why this form constituted for them the ability to channel the discontent arising from the form taken by the service. To address the questions that guide this work various primary and secondary sources were analyzed, in coordination with specific studies on the subject.
