Byzantine grammar has come to us as a large corpus of anonymous material traversed by some famous names and others diffi cult to identify. If the allegation of being repetitive and messy is often justifi ed, Byzantine grammar also offers analysis of high quality. In addition to some original ideas, in this framework there is innotative argumentation linked to the comprehensive analysis of logical possibilities and procedures of refutation which was absent in the canonical models of the Hellenistic period. Our work will focus on the study of passages in which Choeroboscus and the scholiasts of the ȉȤȞȘ ȖȡĮȝȝĮIJȚț by Dionysius Thrax treat specifi c problems about the ȝȡȘ IJȠ૨ ȜંȖȠȣ and the įȚșİıȚȢ. Both problems, going back even beyond the origins of grammar as an autonomous discipline, show how in the Byzantine perspective classical themes are subject to a re-reading that deepens and refi nes argumentative patterns in grammar, in a way that becomes a substantive achievement of this period.
