This article deals with the opposition to the estatutos de Limpieza de Sangre according to Juan Bernal Díaz de Luco (1495-1556) and Alejo Venegas de Busto (c. 1498-1562) in the time of Juan Pardo de Tavera (1472-1545) as Archbishop of Toledo, figure of the Royal Court who was the patron of both of them. Since Díaz de Luco y Venegas expressed their opinions on the Limpieza de Sangre at a time when Tavera would have tried to establish an estatuto in the Cathedral of Toledo, it is interesting to analyze these opinions as part of a controversy this attempt could have caused, as well as to illustrate the limits of patronage relationships and their influence on the religious and social positions, in this case, related to the situation of the conversos.
