This study compares the performance of a deterministic technique, the Branch and Bound method, with a stochastic strategy based on Genetic Algorithms for solving the sensor network design of the steam system of a methanol production plant. The objective function is the total instrumentation cost, and the design satisfies precision and estimability constraints on a set of key process variables. The optimal location of sensors consists of determining if each process variable is measured and when achieved, selecting the number and features of the instruments to be used for the measurement. This formulation results in an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem which can be solved using deterministic and stochastic strategies. The results obtained indicated that the evolutionary strategy always provided good solutions with lower computational cost. On the contrary, the deterministic procedure failed to find a solution in a reasonable time for large-scale plant sectors.
