The paper analyzes the modes ofhisto1icization ofthe 'literary fact' and highlights the role played by tbeory wben thinking about them. For this, it briefly reviews an old controversy between Raymond Picard and Roland Bartbes, and a recent book of literary criticism on argentine fiction, also controversia!: Los prisioneros de la torre by Eisa Drucaroff. Since the historicity of literature cannot be a simple datum for criticism, the paper reflects on the importance of considering it in its specificity, and the important role played by theory in relation to this task. However, it also draws attention finally to the need to refine the theoretical mode of appropriation oflinguistic methodology and conceptuality in order to understand the literary form, to highlight the important role that literary imagination as such, in its open potential, plays even in the most self-referential literary experimentation.
