The article presents two experiences of child participation: the popular education project with children at Merendero1 and Cultural Centre “Les Pibes del Ombú” (Buenos Aires); and the Council “Inventar Pakapaka” of the Argentine state-run children's television channel of the same name. Based on in-depth interviews and sustained ethnographic fieldwork, some important milestones are presented on the transition from initiatives designed for children to those made and built with them. The place of audiovisual production was fundamental in both experiences, beyond their diverse dynamics and scope. It is from this perspective that the concept of ‘participation’ itself is reflected upon, in relation to childhood, and the form it takes in each case, as well as that of visual sovereignty.
