The Epicurean practice of parrhēsia has been analyzed during the last decades from a pedagogical-psychagogical perspective, i.e., as a therapeutic device which was designed to produce certain modifications in the soul of the student. Despite the plurality of aspects that have been studied from that perspective, the question concerning the kind of psychological mechanisms that the Epicureans presumed that underlied the practice of parrhēsia has been completely ignored so far. My aim will be to analize Philodemus' Peri parrhēsias with that question in mind, and to propose an interpretation that brings to light the intellectualist foundations on which the Epicurean approach to parrhēsia is built.
