The present paper intends to systematize the uses and grammatical meanings of pucha (and a set of variants) in different Hispanic American countries and to analyze, particularly, its use as a marker of modality in pucha que. Firstly, we discuss a set of dialectal (and sometimes diachronic) contrastive data. In this way, we establish the distribution of the two main definitions of the interjection ¡pucha!: one of ‘annoyance’ (the most extended in Hispanic America) and one of ‘wonder’ (registered in South America and Honduras), as well as the related expressions that head a complete sentence and function as modality markers: pucha que (employed in the Southern Cone, Perú and, to a lesser extent, Colombia) and pucha si (restricted to the Río de la Plata). Secondly, we analyze the grammatical properties of pucha que in order to conclude that (from a propositional point of view) it introduces a quantification in an event that is considered (emphatically) true. Besides, pucha que pragmatically functions as a marker of exclamative modality, and it is virtually equivalent to exclamative pronouns cuán, cuánto and cuánto/a/s. Moreover, the epistemic repercussions of pucha que are exactly the same that exclamative pronouns have, since they share almost all their grammatical, semantic and pragmatic properties.
