Several processes are carried out in a conical fluidized bed, such as drying, which is applied to soybeans beforehand for enzymatic inactivation. For this reason, the objective of the present work is to define the optimum static bed height for the above-mentioned process, as a function of fluid dynamics. We worked with 3 bed heights: 0.06, 0.1 and 0.15 m, and with frequencies in the range of 5-50 Hz. The behavior of head loss and surface velocity at different heights was compared. At a height of 0.15 m, the downward flow of grains through the walls of the equipment was scarce, and in the center of the bed an internal channel with turbulent upward flow was formed, causing a heterogeneous distribution in the bed. When working with 0.06 m bed height, a high degree of mixing occurred, but the constant impact with the cone walls generated the rupture of a large number of grains. Given the comparisons between the working schemes, it was determined that the optimum working height is 0.1 m, which allowed achieving a high rate of heat and material transfer for efficient grain drying.
