In an agri-food system characterized by the expansion of scale, other trajectories such as small-scale family farming is also observed. Santiago del Estero became one of the soybean production poles inArgentina, but on the other hand, there is a family-type agricultural structure that persists and issustained by other elements. The proposal is to characterize the demographic, productive, commercial aspects and incomes of thirteen farming families located in the Banda department (Santiago del Estero) during the 2020-2021 productive cycle and to demonstrate some social practices on which these aspects are structured. The methodology combines qualitative and quantitative techniques. The contributions revolve around 1) showing the diversified production of the analysis units and the ability to create and sustain markets, 2) understanding that these aspects are structured on the basis of social practices associated with the domestic-productive unit and 3)making visible the dynamic role of family farming in the current system of food production and distribution.
