In this respect, with the support of passages hitherto little recognized, an alternative reading is offered, namely that Bayle would not have wanted to elaborate in the Commentaire philosophique a theory of tolerance but to compile arguments contrary to religious persecution, arguments that could prove their effectiveness in specific situations.
