Abstract

San Bartolomé de los Chaná (SBCH) is a colonial historical site from the 17th century located in the Mouth of the Monje stream (Santa Fe, Argentina). In that place, a Franciscan reduction of Indians was created, founded by Hernando Arias de Saavedra (Hernandarias) and under the responsibility of an encomendero from Santa Fe la Vieja. The materiality of this location is expressed in “La Boca”; exhibiting a wide spectrum of items (indigenous and European) that manifest the interethnic situation of “police life” during the conquest and colonization of the Paraná coast. Among the recovered materials, a collection of 19 Venetian vitreous beads stands out, which began to be studied, macroscopically and typologically, by De Grandis and Rocchietti in 1997. The need to deepen the knowledge of the possible nature of origin and use given to this type of objects motivated, in recent years, different archaeometric analyzes to begin to be carried out on the various specimens that make up said collection. The number of pieces available and the unique nature of some of them led to prioritizing, in the preliminary stages of analysis, the carrying out of non-destructive studies in order to guarantee their conservation. Based on these premises, the following work presents the results derived from the preliminary study of 3 beads from this collection through the use of optical microscopy, x-ray fluorescence and computed tomography. The combination and correlation of these techniques allowed us to advance in the tasks of verifying and obtaining more information on: i) their physical-chemical and compositional qualities (associated with the possible raw materials and manufacturing techniques used for their production). and ii) how these were affected by their interaction with the environment in which the site is located (in this case, an environment of high water energy).
