Like much of Latin America, Argentina has deep regional inequalities, which are even more acute in science and technology than in other socioeconomic dimensions. The aim of this editorial (and, more broadly, of the special issue it introduces) is to analyze how these asymmetries interact with different factors that facilitate or hinder the development of local scientific capacities, the alignment of scientific agendas with socio-productive needs of the region and the creation of processes of knowledge exchange and transfer. First, we review the approach of (peripheral) regional innovation systems and propose an analytical framework for examining the trajectories of the case studies included in the special issue. Second, recognizing the existence of diverse starting points, we provide a quantitative description of the regional context of the cases, including their scientific and technological capabilities, the type of productive structure and the potential degree of alignment between these two dimensions. Finally, we offer a synthetic and comparative overview of the evidence gathered, identifying latent non-quantifiable or qualitative factors and deriving a series of short-, mediumand long-term policy recommendations.
