Security studies represent a central side of international relations. Both, traditional movements and the contributions of the new schools of thought, had an impact both on the discipline and on the concrete actions of the States of the international system. Western powers have been characterized by fostering academic debates, and by including such concepts in the strategic definitions of their state policies. On the other hand, in Latin America, contributions to the debate on international security have been limited and have a relative impact on government actions. This text reviews the schools of thought in security and links it to national and regional decision-making. It is argued that these practices were not accompanied by the generation of anregional academic thought about international security.
