This paper presents the results of the analysis of charcoal remains recovered at the Huencú Nazar site, located in Hinojo-Las Tunas Shallow Lake System, Campo de Dunas del Centro Pampeano (ca. 3.000 years BP), Buenos Aires province. We propose to discuss the data obtained, in articulation with other lines of evidence and, especially, regarding the use of faunal bones as fuel which is characteristic among pampean hunter-gatherers. On this basis we discuss: 1) the processes of formation of the charcoal remains, where the poor conservation of the charcoals is related to fires where wood and bones were burned simultaneously; 2) the ways of using firewood, in which the selection of Condalia microphylla (piquillín) stands out, a plant that, due to its hydrocarbons content, was possibly used as a fire starter, since lighting the bones is difficult; and 3) the availability of woody plants during the occupation period, which indicates the presence of Espinal environments not currently present in the study area. The results contribute to the understanding of the use of firewood as part of the ways of production of hunter-gatherers; they also allow us to re-evaluate the postulates about the availability of woody species as a conditioning factor of past occupation modes.
