In our research group, we have synthesized and characterized various copper, zinc, and cadmium complexes with different organic ligands, including both natural ones (such as 5-hydroxytryptophan) and synthetic ones (like phenanthroline), as well as pharmaceuticals used in human medicine (such as sertraline, telmisartan, among others), although they are not typically employed as antimicrobials. In this study, our focus has been on determining the antimicrobial activity at different levels of complexity. This includes a general screening with the detection of inhibition halos, followed by the measurement of minimum inhibitory concentration, and ultimately assessing post-agent effects and antibiofilm activity. In general, binary complexes maintain the antimicrobial profile of the ligand, while ternary complexes (with phenanthroline) exhibit enhanced profiles.
