Ectoparasites negatively affect the health and welfare of canines, causing various damages and transmitting pathogens. They are important in public health as ectoparasites and as transmitters. In order to demonstrate the presence of prevalent ectoparasitic insects in a vulnerable population bordering the La Plata River, 1851 canines were inspected with the naked eye and in daylight. Specimens were extracted and identified in the laboratory. 41 % of the animals examined presented some ectoparasite, Ctenocephalides canis and Trichodectes canis were identified. Other investigations in the same area have observed Dipylidium caninum and Acanthocheilonema sp. in canines, helminths transmitted by ectoparasitic insects of public health importance.
