In this study, a novel copolymer was synthesized by modifying poly(acrylamide-coacrylic acid) via esterification of the carboxylic groups in the copolymer with the alcohol functional groups of tannic acid. The aim was to obtain a copolymer with lateral branched structures and study their impact on the viscosity of aqueous solutions for potential application in enhanced oil recovery. The synthesized macromolecules were characterized by FTIR to confirm the covalent incorporation of tannic acid. The results revealed that adding tannic acid at concentrations of 0.4, 4.0, and 10.0% in the reaction produced polymers with different levels of incorporated branched monomer. Finally, the rheological properties of aqueous solutions of the obtained copolymers were evaluated to investigate the effects of the incorporated intra- and intermolecular interactions. The results demonstrated that the viscosity of the solutions were at least 440% greater compared to the original poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) in water.
