Acerca de la concepción kantiana de las emociones y las pasiones y su relación con la libertad humana

Abstract

El objetivo del presente artículo es mostrar que, para Kant, los seres humanos que adolecen una pasión no pueden, en primer lugar, buscar su felicidad ni, en segundo lugar, actuar moralmente. Esta circunstancia se debe a que estos individuos están constantemente enfocados en la búsqueda exclusiva de la satisfacción de su propia pasión. Aquí nos centraremos en esta incapacidad del individuo apasionado para el obrar moral. A fin de precisar el concepto de pasión, lo presentaremos junto a una determinación de la mente que hasta cierto punto se le asemeja, esto es, la emoción. Cabe destacar que, según Kant, la virtud es la fortaleza de la voluntad con respecto al obrar moral. El ejercicio de la virtud puede ayudar a reducir la intensidad de las pasiones, pero nunca erradicarlas totalmente, porque este ejercicio virtuoso no puede completarse absolutamente, sino solamente ser perseguido asintóticamente hacia el infinito. Los textos kantianos más relevantes para nuestro problema son la Crítica de la facultad de juzgar (1790), la Metafísica de las costumbres (1797) y la Antropología en sentido pragmático (1798).

The aim of this article is to show that, for Kant, human beings that suffer from passion cannot, in the first place, seek their happiness nor, in the second place, act morally. This circumstance is due to the fact that these individuals are constantly focused on the exclusive search for the satisfaction of their own passion. Here I will concentrate on this incapacity of the passionate individual for moral acting. In order to specify the concept of passion, I will present it in conjunction with a determination of the mind that, to a certain extent, is similar to it, that is, the emotion. It is worth noting that, according to Kant, virtue is the fortitude of the will in respect to the fulfillment of the moral law. The exercise of virtue may help to reduce the intensity of passions, but it can never totally eradicate them, because this virtuous exercise cannot be absolutely completed, but only asymptotically pursued towards the infinite. The most relevant Kantian texts for this discussion are the Critique of the Power of Judgment (1790), the Metaphysics of Morals (1797) and the Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View (1798).
