This article seeks to analyze the growing use of nature as a resource in contemporary conflicts regarding occupations of space by the poor in the city of Buenos Aires. For the analysis, I will refer to the case of a villa (Argentine word for slum) whose inhabitants were evicted by the city government during 2006 in order to build a new green space corridor facing the Río de la Plata. My concern lies not only in the study of the effect of certain public policies on this population – including their disputes and negotiations – but also in how the legitimacy of these policies is constructed, wherein the environmental argument plays a central role. I will also look into how the inhabitants of Aldea Gay use environmental arguments to contest the accusations of usurpation and damaging nature.
