The aim of this paper is to carry out a detailed analysis of the functioning of the faculties in Immanuel Kant’s Analytic of the sublime in order to underline two aspects: firstly, the role of violence in the dynamics between sensibility, imagination, understanding and reason as a constitutive element of enlightened aesthetico-political subjectivation; secondly, the fact that Kant conceives of the relationship between different faculties in an eminently political manner, and more particularly, that what happens in the phenomenon of the sublime is the impossibility of the understanding’s legislation over the real. Kant saves, however, the subjective sovereignty from the anarchy presented by the challenge of the sublime by means of an appeal to reason as a last resource that jumps over the expected mediations.
