This paper compares the analysis of the historical-communal world of Anthony Steinbock and Roberto Walton. According to Steinbock, such an analysis requires a generative phenomenology. Generative phenomenology analyzes the intergenerational process of generation of meaning without reducing it to the operations of an Ego. Generative phenomenology is non-foundational and goes beyond the limitations of the genetic method. On the contrary, Walton argues that the analysis of the communal-historical world does not imply forsaking genetic phenomenology and the egological perspective. The author emphasizes that the Ego constitutes a center of manifestation, legitimation, historicization, and spontaneity. Therefore, it is necessary to (i) clarify the modalities of empathy through which the Ego acquires an experience of ancestors, and (ii) consider the different perspectives of the members of the intergenerational community. It is concluded that the egological starting point does not pose a barrier to a phenomenology of the communal-historical world.
