It is not an original production, but a local version, with the same title and slight corrections, of the work collected in the book "Populism in Latin America. Theories, history and values", compiled by Éric Dubesset and Lucia Majlátova and published by Presses Universitaires de Bordeaux. Latin American populist identities emerge proposing the redemption of subaltern sectors or those who have suffered damage. They do so by claiming the representation of the "true country" and challenging the current power. The evidence of a divided society that follows the emergency of populism demonstrates that the actors of the old order were far from constituting a mere unrepresentative excrescence, coming to form vigorous oppositions. The populisms thus constitute a particular and bloodless way of negotiating the existing tension between the representation of a subalternized part of society and the representation of the community as a whole. It will be precisely this double face of populism, as a divider and a recomposer of the community, that explains the paradoxical coexistence of the breadth of its representation in the context of a strongly polarized society.
