Between the late sixties and early seventies, Patricio Randle (1927-2016), César Vapñarsky (1929-2003) and Horacio Torres (1932-2001) produced three series of maps on the Gran Buenos Aires. Randle´s “urban stain", Vapñarsky’smapping of the "agglomeration" and Torres´s "social maps", which they published in different rhythms and scenarios, have been consulted and cited by a wide range of specialists. Their approaches in the examining of the phases of metropolitan growth were not entirely new, since their views, in their similarities and differences, were tributaries of the postgraduate studies they carried out in other countries and that on his return they translated and adapted in dialogue with local debates. The study of the maps themselves and their production circumstances, subject of this fi rst approach to thesources, raises questions about the methodologies of urban representation on the eve of the dissemination of geographic information systems and about the issues and problems of urban studies in those years.
