This work deals with the doctrine of principles in Numenius of Apamea, as can be reconstructed from various fragments and testimonies which have reached us. Firstly, I will comment on some passages of the extensive commentary In Platonis Timaeum by Chalcidius, which refers to the Numenian doctrine of principles (one/god – dyad/matter) and discloses his extreme dualism and his opposition to monist interpretation, which is explicitly criticised in it. Then, I will analyse the two Proclus’ testimonies in which Numenius’ doctrine of three gods is clearly expounded. Finally, I will deal with some of the fragments written by Eusebius of Caesarea in Book XI of his Praeparatio Evangelica, which refer almost exclusively to the distinction between a first god and a second god, with the exception of fragment 11. By examining the different doctrines that have reached us through these various authors, I will attempt to offer an overview of the Numenian theory of principles, so as to specify the special feature in Numenius’ thought within the context of the Platonism of his time.
