In this work, the K/Al2O3 catalyst and the corresponding monolithic catalyst were prepared and characterized. The samples were studied in the transesterification of soybean oil with methanol at 60 °C, with an alcohol:oil molar ratio = 30, and a 1% catalyst load for the powder catalyst tests and 0,5% for the monolith test. The powder catalyst presented a FAME yield of 73,0 and 64,0% for its first and second use respectively, after 5 hs of reaction. Comparing the monolithic sample to the powder catalyst (under the same reaction conditions), the FAME yield was of 58,0% and 60,5% respectively. The leaching tests indicated that K is lost in the first two tests; remain stable in the next three tests. It is inferred that the homogeneous species generated in the reaction played an important role in the activity.
