| dc.description.abstract | A review of Pier Paolo Pasolini's extensive work allows us to imagine some of the possible motives for his murder in Ostia, near Rome, in 1975. The artistic and political disobedience he represented and the sexual freedom he proudly lived earned him a life of judicial persecution and censorship from the very beginning of his work. Alongside an important career as a poet, filmmaker, and essayist, he had a complex relationship with materialism. He accepted the influence of Marxism and made it public in his works, but he also explored his contradictions with the Italian Communist Party and a certain version of humanism in an anti-bourgeois crusade. His contradictory vision of the political world was characterized as a “heretical empiricism” because, Marxist and reasonably atheist, he held a visceral fascination with the sacredness of the popular and with a certain spirituality that he saw taking shape in certain areas of social reality. In his poetic work, as well as in his essays and pieces of journalism, he polemicized with official Marxism and Catholicism, which he called “the two churches” and criticized for not understanding the culture of their proletarian and peasant base. It was in films that he found a language deep enough to establish these connections and discover the materiality of the people. Reviewing some of his films to discover it entails, among other things, examining some of his early images to find the surface of politics there. | es |
