In the face of the crisis of Mexican cinema, encouraged by the arrival of new media as television, and the attrition of the genres that had internationalized Mexican film industry during the classical period, producers striving to preserve their place in the industry developed narrative and spectacular structures that sought to promote the massive attendance of audiences to the cinemas. The technological and spectatorial changes, and the historical and social contexts that enabled the emergence of new topics, led to rethink the conception and development of the narrative strategies of the films themselves. With this article, we will explore this issue through one case study: the multiplicity of genre variants deployed by Mexican producer Guillermo Calderón between the 1960s and 1980s.These variants show an early emergence in Latin America of what we can consider a post-genre cinema, based in an update, in this case, of terror, western and cabareteras melodramas, which Calderón attempted to extend through a series of crossings and hybridizations.
